Bobcats: Elusive Predators in Maryland
Rare Sightings in Central and Southern Counties
Bobcats, primarily found in western Maryland, have occasionally been spotted in the Piedmont and eastern regions of the state. These elusive felines, the only wild cats native to Maryland, have become increasingly infrequent sightings in central and southern counties as their natural habitat has matured.
Distribution and Population Assessment
Kevin Lamp, a research technologist at Penn State University, has assisted in assessing the distribution of bobcats in Maryland. Scientists estimate the state's bobcat population to be approximately 14 million, although an exact count remains elusive due to their elusive nature.
