Federal Electoral Committee Confirms Result of 2021 German Bundestag Election

Final Result Announced After Partial Repeat Election in Berlin

WIESBADEN and BERLIN, Germany (February 12, 2023)

The Federal Electoral Committee (FES) has announced the final result of the 2021 German federal election, following a partial repeat election held in Berlin on February 11, 2024.

As per electoral law, the 2021 election was required to be held on a Sunday between August 29 and October 24, inclusive, following the dissolution of the 19th Bundestag. Due to irregularities in some Berlin constituencies, a partial repeat election was deemed necessary.

In today's meeting, the FES confirmed the overall results of the 2021 election, taking into account the results of the partial repeat election in Berlin. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) emerged as the strongest party, winning 25.7% of the vote. The Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) came in second with 24.5%, followed by the Alliance 90/The Greens with 14.8%, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) with 11.5%, and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) with 10.3%.

The FES's decision brings the 2021 federal election process to a close and sets the stage for the formation of a new German government.
